Interestingly, this year most of the winners in Down Beat Magazine's critics' poll of "rising star" jazz musicians are middle aged. Five of them are over fifty, old enough to join A.A.R.P. Here is a list of the 2011 winners, with their approximate ages (I wasn't able to figure out their precise ages in all cases):
Ambrose Akinmusire: 28
John Hollenbeck: 43
Vijay Iyer: 40
Anat Cohen: 36
Jon Irabagon: 32
J.D. Allen: 38
Claire Daley: 40 some-odd
Luis Bonilla: 45
Ben Goldberg: 51
Nicole Mitchell: 43
Nasheet Waits: 40
Cyro Baptista: 50
Jason Adasiewicz: mid-30s
Christian Howes: 39
John Hebert: 40ish
Esperanza Spalding: 26
Mary Halvorson: 30ish
Craig Taborn: 41
Robert Glasper: 33
Erik Friedlander: 51
José James: 33
Gretchen Parlato: 35
Darcy James Argue: 36
Ted Nash: 51
Greg Osby: 50
I guess some of these "rising stars" will be hoping they'll really make it big by the time they're ready to apply for social security.
I also find it curious that Anat Cohen, unless I'm mistaken, is the only non-American on the list...
